Welcome! The Roosevelt Debating Society is dedicated to everything related to speaking in public. Whether you’ve been debating for years or your hands are getting sweaty at just the thought of standing in front of other people, we provide the platform to improve your public speaking, argumentation, and critical analysis skills. Make sure to stay up to date by liking our Facebook page!
Every Tuesday night (8PM in Eleanor 7!) we have a new experienced debater giving either a workshop on debating/speaking or a lecture on a controversial topic, and after that we debate, mostly in British Parliamentary format. The most important thing is that you are completely free to do whatever you want: speaking, judging, or just listening to the lecture. In 2017 we also started with a special series, “UCR Debates”, in which we invite the most knowledgeable, the most controversial, or just the best professors from UCR to give a special lecture on a topic close to their heart, after which we debate it in a much more informal style, with way more people. Topics have included explaining Donald Trump and analyzing the European crisis, and these will surely be followed by more! If you want to expand your debating horizon a little and go beyond the weekly training, you should join us at one of the many debating tournaments we go to. The tournament season starts with our own Roosevelt Open at the start of the Fall break, and continues with tournaments at all the major Dutch universities. Interested? Be sure to join our Facebook group, RDS goes tournaments, to stay up to date. If you have any questions, shoot one of us a message on Facebook or send us a mail on [email protected]. See you coming Tuesday! |

At a Model United Nations conference, students from all over the world come together to literally ‘model’ a UN conference. Depending on the conference, several UN committees such as the Security Council, UNICEF, or the General Assembly are simulated, and all countries are represented by the students.
In 2016, RDS started to set up infrastructure for Model United Nations, in collaboration with PoLaw. While PoLaw takes care of the lectures on actual politics and law, RDS provides the training platform for the rules and procedures of a Model United Nations conference. On top of that, we make sure that everyone who wants to is able to attend a conference. After a successful start, with delegations going to a.o. UCUMUN and Paris MUN, we hope to further expand our network and provide more training sessions in Fall 2017. To get a front row seat on all our updates, be sure to like Roosevelt MUN on Facebook! |
